Can a "Chick" be a Feminist?

Every now and then we'll come across something like this:

"Wow, I don't think I've ever found a more stereotypical site. One giant step backwards for feminism..."

Being talked about is a good thing, even in light of a comment like that so we're hardly offended.

But seriously.

Why are we so easily offended when it comes to:

The color pink ~ shame on the Breast Cancer Think Pink people;

The term "Chick" (a young woman, a pretty girl, a baby chicken) ~ shame on us;

Discussions about shopping, beauty, restaurants, wellness and relationships ~ Come on. We're all guilty here...

Anyone who visits ChickAdvisor regularly knows that the quality of opinions and advice shared here are really good. One look at the discussions in our forums and there is no denying the opinions expressed are by confident, self assured modern women who see themselves as anything but anti-feminists.

What do you guys think? Can you be a Chick and a Feminist at the same time?

The Haters will find something wrong with everything. Maybe AskPatty is the only acceptable site, since you're talking cars? Are the topics this site is based on somewhat frivolous in the grand scheme of things? Sure. But who cares, since we ARE going to be gabbing like this with our girlfriends. This site only utilizes that fact and widens our knowledge base about these things. And the forums are great, because so many different kinds of conversations happen and are beneficial to all.

Let's rag on a few other backward-thinking entities:

-Msn.com for having an entertainment section and dedicated gossip columnist. For that matter, let's chuck ET, The Insider, and Access Hollywood for putting Tinseltown banalities on the front burner. We hear more about Paris Hilton and Britney Spears than world events in some newscasts. Let's chuck them too.

-Libraries for stocking Harlequin novels (and I use that term lightly). It's trashy soft porn and has little to do with literature.

-Political pundits, and heck, most of the voting public for not being sure if the country can handle a president from a visible minority or, *gasp* a woman!

-Anyone who spent more than 5 seconds worrying about Ellen Degeneres' doggie saga, and then criticized her brutally for shedding a few tears.

The point is our culture is saturated with things that, when examined, are ridiculous to some degree and offensive to certain people.

I think people take the feminine out of feminism. We're supposed to be Home Depot-shopping, rally-holding, bra-burning radicals who eschew any form of beauty enhancement. Look at strong women like Oprah or Tyra - they take care of their looks too.

Feminism is about recognizing equality between the genders, and I really don't see that this site questions this at all. Women don't conform to a Lucy Ricardo, Pam Anderson, or Grace Kelly. It's a continuum that includes the sporty, comedic, scrapbook-loving, parental, non-parental, brainiac, fashion-conscious, Brad Pitt-stalking, musical, and fun-loving women we are... and there's nothing wrong with that!

I shudder to imagine the day when men stop taking care of themselves - just think of all the shaggy, sweatsuit-clad, raggedy-fingernailed, beer-hatted shleps we'd be stuck with! My man always asks my opinion on his clothes and has very specific taste in aftershave and such. Does this make him backward? Oh yes, probably.

Absolutely you can be both!

I consider myself a lipstick feminist. I'm all for equality of women and have worked very hard to prove myself in a male dominated industry, but I also take pride in my appearance. I don't think that makes me any less of a feminist.

Ignore the haters. I think that comment was ignorant and that ChickAdvisor is amazing and so useful. Anyone who thinks otherwise obviously hasn't used the site.

Keep up the good work!
