The five best friends every woman should have

Men have always known: women are complicated!

After 14 years together, my husband is still confused. When I enthuse about the new shoes I bought, his eyes glaze over. When I change topics on him without warning, he is totally lost and irritated. When I vent about my life, he tries to fix it for me - even when I tell him I just want him to listen.

He doesn't get me. Sound familiar?

Is it any wonder we girls rely so much on our friends to make sense of our lives? When Husband talks to his friends, it's either shoptalk or the glory days.

"Hey dude, remember that time we planted titty mags in Mr. Mercer's desk during Parent/Teacher conferences? That was awesome, man!"

Women draw on their friends for what their men can't give them. I certainly couldn't live without my five best girls.

1. Annika is my crazy fun friend, the one I call when I'm in the mood for karaoke, clubbing, or glow-bowling. She even knows how to shit in the woods. Whenever I need to let out the beast, she's on my speed dial.

2. Abby is my confidante. She knows all my dark secrets, even the ones I should take to my grave. While she doesn't always have an answer, it's safe to unload with her. Also, she makes a killer martini.

3. My mature friend Janet is my wise mentor. She has experienced so much in her life and always gives me a healthy dose of perspective. Even though the generational gap can sometimes complicate things, I can always count on her to help me see "the big picture".

4. Jess is the friend whose life is least like my own. In our case, I'm the married stay-at-home mom and she's the single career woman. It can be affirming to see her struggles as she sees mine whenever we're wondering if the grass is actually greener.

5. Mel is my cousin, and my link to the past. She keeps me grounded, and family gatherings are actually fun when she's there. At the most opportune times, she will remind me about the 4-year-long crush I had on a nerdy little guy named Chris.

My husband is not remotely jealous of these close relationships; if anything, he's relieved.

Career Satisfaction: Are you there yet?

We recently posted a poll on our homepage about job satisfaction. Do you love your job, hate it or are you currently working towards your career utopia? 25% of you said you hate your job or are totally indifferent about it (equally bad in our books), 20% said you are in your dream career and 55% said you are still working towards it. So essentially only 20% of us are truly happy where we are while the rest feel there is a long way to go. Obviously part of that has to do with age and what stage you are in life and with your career.

5 years ago, I would have been in the I-hate-my-job camp. I spent over 4 years as a professional insurance claims adjuster. Telling that to people generally makes their eyes glaze over or change the subject. Yes, I was the person telling you your car is worth $5000 less than you thought it was and that your broken arm from that slip and fall in the grocery store is not worth 1 MILLION! Dollars. (You'd be surprised how many people think a bruise is worth just that much in our litigious society.)

While many of my coworkers enjoyed handling claims, I was really depressed that my life would be spent evaluating injuries and assigning fault to car crashes. I wanted to do something fun and creative. I found myself stuck in a rut. I knew I didn't want to do what I was doing, but I couldn't afford to leave. I wasn't making enough money to take 6 months off to hunt for a new job. I got to the point where I felt like I wasn't even me anymore and knew I had to break out. I started socking away as much of my paycheque as I could every month, planning my escape. Luckily I met my extremely supportive husband, Alex, during this time who told me to stop being so cautious and just quit already. What's the worst that could happen?

It's been almost 4 years since I quit that job and I am so glad I did. I went back to school (thank you OSAP and Canadian Millenium Excellence Awards!) and Alex and I launched ChickAdvisor last fall. My career has taken me in areas I never would have imagined. Me + Internet would have seemed impossible 4 years ago given that one of my favorite rants was, "I HATE technology!"

I can honestly say I am totally thrilled with my career path. I've never had less sleep, money or free time, but I've never been happier professionally. Turns out I love the internet. I also love being able to make my own show, which has been a life long dream.

If you have a passion for something, go after it with all of your heart. You will do so much better in something you love than something that just "pays the bills". I truly believe each of us have a specific job to do with our lives. It is different for everyone and it is just a matter of figuring out what that is and then doing it to the best of your ability. If you live poor for a few months, who cares? If you go broke, it isn't the end of the world. In the end, wouldn't you rather say, "I tried but I failed" than "I wonder what would have happened if..."? Ideally you'd like to say " I tried and I succeeded."

Chances are, if you are intelligently pursuing your passion that's exactly what you'll be able to say.

Credit Cards 101

When I went on a high school trip to Paris, my parents gave me a credit card to use for emergencies. 46 souvenir T-shirts and 5 bottles of perfume later, they took it back. Hey, the prices were in francs, OK? How was I supposed to know how much that costs in *real* money?

The agreement had been to pay them back, which I eventually did, of course. I learned some valuable lessons about credit, limits, and interest, too.

Most of us applied for our own credit card sometime during college or shortly after. If you were like me, you probably just filled out the first 2 or 3 congratulatory "You've Been Pre-approved!" letters from eager lenders that landed in your mailbox.

Was that the smartest decision? Just like a major purchase, it is crucial that you select the card right for you - not whatever is flung your way. A recent investigation from Consumer Reports explains exactly what you should look for and avoid in your credit card collection.

1. All lenders are not created equal. The majority of mailed offers come from a handful of credit companies, most of whom ended up in the bottom of the rankings. Top picks were dominated by credit unions and certain department stores (e.g. Nordstrom). Two key criteria that influenced ratings were interest-rate problems and problem resolution.

2. Understand your choices. Rewards cards often charge a yearly fee and have higher interest rates if you choose to carry a balance. Zero-percent cards apply to the first few months only, and may then zoom up to 15-18% interest after the introductory period is over. If you typically carry a balance, pick a card with the lowest interest rate. Incentive-based cards charge rates that often cost more than the benefit you signed up for.

3. Read the fine print. If you make a late payment, you will be charged a late fee in addition to the extra interest. You may be forced to continue at a bad interest rate for a few billing cycles even if you pay in full on time, until a prescribed amount of time has passed. Some late fees might be as high as $100. Also, if you are late on another bill (not related to your credit card), watch out for a "Universal Default" clause that would allow your creditor to increase your interest even if you have a perfect payment history with them.

If you are not satisfied with your current card but aren't sure if you should switch, call your creditor. You might be surprised at the efforts they will make to keep you as their customer. Late fees, interest rates, and incentives may be negotiable.

Orfeo Quagliata Glass Bracelets

While perusing NYMag.com, we came across these... These gorgeous colorful bobbles are the creation of Orfeo Quagliata, a glass artist from Mexico City.

When we saw these we immediately wanted one... or several! The colors and shapes are so beautiful! However they are $132 each, which we think is steep.

What do you think? Would you pay $132 for one of these?

Fall '07 Top 10 Shopping List

Shopping every season is fun, but replacing your entire wardrobe every 3 months isn’t realistic. We believe the key to keeping in style without blowing your budget is to incorporate just a few new key pieces into your wardrobe each season to freshen it up.

We’ve
researched the top trends this fall and compiled an easy shopping list for you! In no particular order:

1. The Wide Leg

Guess Sapphire Trouser Pants, $90ish

Unlike summer’s skinny jeans, the wide leg trouser or jean can be worn by anyone and doesn’t require a stick thin figure. Look for pants that skim the bum and let out slightly at the bottom.

2. The Over-sized Bag
Roots Lauren Tote, $288

What woman doesn't love a ginormous bag? Some may think we’re ridiculous toting around 10lbs of, er, important stuff every day, but the over sized bag trend ensures room for all of it. Need a sweater for the evening? Throw it in the bag. Running late and have to do your makeup in the car? Not a problem! Your entire makeup kit will fit nicely in that huge bag.

Colors to watch for this season are charcoal grey, dark brown or black with patent accents.

3. Shiny Shiny
Nine West Goor Ankle Boot, $109ish

Shiny has been around for a couple of seasons and it isn't going away any time soon. Invest in a pair of this must have booties, a shiny pair of pants, a sparkly sweater or a silk charmeuse blouse.

4. The Sweater Dress
Bebe, $89

A look that flatters nearly everyone, the sweater dress can be worn over jeans or with patterned leggings, and boots. Cinch it at the waist with a belt or just add a simple long necklace.

It is important to invest in a good quality sweater. A cheap blend involving acrylics and other low end materials will have you inhaling fuzzies, getting them stuck on your pants, pilling and static cling.

5. The Low Heeled Tall Boot
Frye Dorado Riding Boot, $458ish

Get the best of both worlds! The sophisticated look of the tall boot with the comfort of a low heel. Tuck your jeans in or wear them with a skirt. They always look fabulous and you can walk in them to work or school without killing your feet!

6. The High Waist
Club Monaco High-Waisted Mini Wool Skirt, $129

We post this trend with the following caution: You must have a relatively flat tummy to pull this off. You don't have to be super skinny, but if you carry extra weight around your middle, give this look a pass as it could make you look heavier.

This look works really well for women with small waists to accentuate an hour glass figure. When done properly it is very sophisticated.

7. Blue Nails
OPI Nail Polish "Blue My Mind " , $5.50ish

Spring ushered in jewel tones and blue is going to stick it out for another season. Indigo, electric blue or navy are your best bets for this trend. Keep nails short and well groomed or you'll just look like you got your hand slammed in the door.

Don't like this look? Stick with neutrals like OPI's Bubble Bath or SweetHeart.

8. The Scarf
Urban Outfitters Lurex Plaid Scarf, $20

The scarf is the perfect accessory to add a punch of color to a neutral outfit while protecting your neck from the cooler fall temperatures. Try a western style scarf like this one or throw on a long knit scarf. Wrap it once around your neck and let the ends hang loose in the front.

9. The Belt
Wide Croco Print Patent Leather Belt, $14ish

Wear them skinny, wide or tie them on the side; the belt is worn around the smallest part of your waist, cinching it tightly to add instant 1940s Hollywood Glamour. The belt creates an hour glass effect.

If you are short waisted, stick with thiner belts. If you have a long waist wear whatever you want, lucky girl!

10. Sponsor a Charity

Giving back is always in style. Why not spare a few bucks on someone in desperate need? Sponsoring a Child in an impoverished country will run you about $30 a month, but satisfaction with this purchase is guaranteed.

However, we understand that not everyone can afford to cough up extra cash so here’s an idea that requires no funds whatsoever: Donate your gently used clothing. A simple Google search for your city will give you a list of local charities more than willing to accept your donations. Some will even come and pick them up. Read more about this.

Two Weeks in Winnipeg

Though I am originally from Winnipeg, every time I go back and visit my hometown I am newly surprised by the way they do things there. For example, driving. Winnipeggers have a much more relaxed philosophy on things like green lights, stop signs and advanced turn signals. Generally a left turn signal will let through approximately 2.5 cars. Not because the light is too short, but because the drivers aren’t in any particular hurry. They will wait at the blinking green light for a good 5 seconds before slowly meandering through the intersection like they don’t have a care in the world. I imagine they are looking out the window admiring the flatness of the prairies or that they temporarily forgot where the gas pedal was. You’d get shot in Toronto for taking that long to move through an intersection, or at least some serious horn honking and profanities directed your way.

Sadly, the shopping is lame and I was surprised to see that the prices were actually higher in chain stores like Jacob than they are in Toronto. A pair of capris on sale in Toronto for $9.99 were $29.99 in the 'Peg.

I observed a $5 vacuum cleaner yard sale on Hwy #9 (WTF??) where someone had unloaded about 50 used vacuum cleaners onto their front lawn with large tacky signs advertising the sale.

Though the pace of life there is much slower, there are still some surprising similarities with other major metropolitans. Winnipeggers love their gourmet food. There are so many fantastic upscale restaurants in Winnipeg, you never need to eat a bad meal. We’re partial to the sushi over at Wasabi. They also love a quality espresso. Cafes and espresso bars are abundant and usually have a plentiful selection of cakes and other mouth-watering confections, like Just Deserts Café on Provencher Blvd.

They’re equally cottage-obsessed as Ontarians and spend nearly every summer weekend in the Whiteshell, Grand Beach or the Lake of the Woods region, all within a 2 hour drive of downtown Winnipeg.

While Winnipeg isn’t exactly a vacation destination it certainly offers up the cleanest fresh air you could ask for. My lungs and allergies were happy to take a vacation from the wheezy Toronto air. Grass, flowers and bonfires scent the air and the sounds of crickets, birds and wind in the trees can be heard anywhere – even downtown, (which is more like a couple of blocks of tall-ish buildings).

Whether you live in Winnipeg or are just visiting, the city certainly has its good points and is worth exploring.

This visit I was honored to become an Auntie again...

Whatever it's quirks, Winnipeg will always have a special place in my heart.
