Racially insensitive? Avant-garde? Or just an interesting cover shot? When I saw Vogue's latest cover, my first impression was fierce, strong. I found it intriguing. Others disagree...
-a feral black man snatches his white damsel á là King Kong
-criminalizing black people with a wild depiction that frightens
-the helpless female knocking women's lib back, one carefully tousled curl at a time
Is it that I have always felt race is such a non-issue for me that I wouldn't have picked up on this, were it not for the commentary I read this morning? Or do I give myself too much credit and racial stereotyping simply falls below my radar already?
There are others who would suggest that this is more like flagrantly demonstrating how much a non-issue race has become (or at least, should become). That we are not even surprised to see a black man holding a white woman should be something to celebrate.
I just liked the picture, folks. If it was actual art hanging at the Guggenheim, I might have mused about hidden messages. But when I see it sandwiched between Soap Opera Digest and value packs of Orbit, I don't tend to take it seriously.
How does your first impression of the photo compare to your position when you read such comments? Leave your feedback please!

I absolutely disagree with those statements - ridiculous! Why does everything always have to go back to race when a black man and a white woman are pictured together?? The article is about strong athletic bodies. Lebron's expression is about strength and being a fierce to be reckoned with in basketball - he's huge! Gisele looks like she's running in the wind with her ever-so-perfect body. Well, the photo is genius and has everyone talking no matter what Vogue's intention was. I love it!
I just saw this cover tonight at CVS. I didn't think of it racially AT ALL but I though Gisele looked awful. I mean her face... lol, it doesn't look attractive. But that was about all I thought of it.
I wouldn't say it's offensive, but of course if you thoroughly analyze anything you can make it offensive (not you, but anyone)! It's all a matter of interpretation, but I guess I could see now how some feathers were ruffled about it.
Wow - just catching up here. How ridiculous is right.
Living in Toronto I hardly ever notice a person's race anymore. I just see people. So the race stereotype they are talking about didn't even cross my mind when I first looked at the cover. I thought it was fun.
I think people are just looking for controversy wherever they can find it. Pathetic.
