Pet Peeve: Princess Crowns

For the bride to be, there is a lot of pressure to succumb to the "bride of today" look. For some inexplicable reason, once the ring is on the finger we find ourselves compelled to buy the ubiquitous strapless gown, zigzag part our hair, plop a load of hard crunchy curls on top of our heads and buy that sparkly dangly matchy earrings and necklace set we know we will never ever wear again. And we work ourselves into a frenzy to find that tacky $hit.

For the most part, this is forgivable. As a bride you are planning the party of a lifetime trying to meet the expectations of your future Mother in law, Great Aunt Bea, and hundreds of other relatives and well wishers you don't really know or care to. So it is understandable that your judgment may lapse a little in the hair department. However, just because you are about to become someone's wife does not give you the right to wear this:

We are not your subjects. You are not the queen. You aren't even a princess. You are a grown woman making a lifetime commitment to a man you fell in love with. And unless you are Kate Middleton, he's probably not going to be the King.

There is something so irksome about the crown. It is unoriginal, over priced, uninspiring and it automatically makes you look like a Bridezilla: Like a girl caught up in her childhood wedding dream screeching to everyone in earshot that everything must be perfect. Like a 10 year old playing dress up, trying desperately to look like Cinderella.

If you must put something sparkly in your hair, find a small delicate hair piece or pin. Better yet, tuck a flower behind your ear. Do not give into the pressure to get the crown. The couple hundred dollars you will spend on that would be much better invested in your shoes. Your feet will thank you.

Do you dare defend the Bride Crown? Bring it!

100% agreed!! When I was looking for my "crown", the salesperson talked me out of it and told me tiaras are totally out of date. No one wears that anymore. I believed her and went with cute little rhinestone hairclips instead. But then, I was a little disappointed to see tiaras are still very much "in" and I didn't get to wear "my crown". In retrospect, I'm soooooooooo GLAD I went with hairclips instead of the stupid tiara!! The clips probably cost me just as much $$ but I still wear my clips all the time. They look great with jeans or cocktail dress for a party. The No-Tiara advice was probably the best wedding planning advice I got!!

Haha! So good to hear, BB! I know I probably stepped on more than a few toes with this one but it needed to be said. Hair clips are definitely a better idea.

I once saw this image that made my insides crawl... and I'm not even going to bother looking for it to post here because we really don't need to be traumatized any fruther.

It was... I'm not kidding.. a Crocs wedding. The bride.. and bridesmaids, and everyone's fucking uncle.. were all wearing those hideous things on their feet. Ugh, I wanted to die.

I dare not challenge the bride crown. No tiara for me. However, I plan to go for some sort of band of flowers in my hair. Waaaaay more me.

PREACH girl. I hate these things with a passion. When I go to a wedding and I see the zig zag part, crunchy curls, and tacky sparkly tiara, I kinda want to run up and slap it right off the bride's head....is that wrong?

LOL, I don't have such passionate disregard for the crown so much as the princess style dress. I did that back when I went to prom ten years ago. (Along with being big and poufy, it was white too!) Why do I need to don yet another princess dress? I would definitely want a more sophisticated silhouette. Of course I say this now but when/if I get engaged...

OMG hilarious! I'm a laid-back kind of chick and tiara's are way over-the-top for me. one of my girlfriends got married and had the whole deal going on - poofy dress, tiara, gawdy necklace and earrings but no one had the heart to tell her she had too much going on because she loved it so much. and it's true once that tiara goes on bridezilla breaks loose!!!
