Weekend Movie Recommendation: The Orphanage

Another hit from Guillermo del Toro, the brilliant director behind Pan's Labyrinth. The Orphanage (El Orfanato) will chill you to the bone. It is in Spanish with subtitles but the cinematography and acting are so well done you won't feel burdened by them. I saw it a couple of weeks ago and am still freaked out by it. Perfect for Halloween!

Fan Mail

We love getting emails from our members and readers. It totally makes my day.

Now I'm not sure if this one that I recently got is real or spam. It seems too funny to be serious, but it was addressed to me and well...

Borat Wants You to Vote

So, American sistahs... are you going to vote?

The vid is worth watching - esp because of Borat. Can't get enough of that guy. There's also a shaggy guy in the midst of it who I think is Jason Segel, whom I love ever since Sarah Marshall, but I'm not sure if that's him because he looks so scruffy. Is that him?

What Women Want: A Literary Journey

Hosts L-R: Yvonne Kai, Rachel, Shanne Ingleton, Catriona Smart, Christa Jean

I recently had the pleasure of attending this event thrown by the lovely Shannae Ingleton. Shannae is an athlete/fashionista/femme extraordinaire who loves bringing women together. Her blog features women of influence on a regular basis to share their inspiring stories. Several times a year, Shannae throws a party around a different theme.

A Literary Journey was a giant book club around the book Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin, with a 3 course meal at 1 King West, a DJ and everyone in dresses. There were about 120 of us and everyone had a great time. It could best be described as the most glamorous book club you've ever been to.
Tika Simone had everyone in stitches

Shannae is a women to watch for. She is smart, dynamic and warm. I can only imagine where she will be 5 years from now!

Evan and Dean Spring 2009

Evan and Dean are not the names of the design duo behind this fresh 3 year old Vancouver based label. Raymond Boutet & Lyle Reimer named the line after two of their nephews. We had the pleasure of interviewing them backstage before the show to find out a little bit about their Spring 2009 collection.

Their collection, "Future Folk" combines high-tech with folk -craft to give the future a softer feel. The future doesn't have to be cold and hard, they explained. They wanted to give it warmth and femininity. They certainly achieved that.

Cutout patterns and applique were juxtaposed with arm and ankle cuffs and a few Wonder Woman-esque head pieces. Tangerine and crisp white are certainly colours to watch for next spring. I loved the evening dresses and want to know where I can get my hands on those awesome cuffs!

L-R: Raymond Boutet, Lyle Reimer, Ali de Bold

Evan & Dean has appeared in Women's Wear Daily, Flare, FASHION, Sportswear International, NUVO, Hello! Canada and Zink, among other major Canadian and American publications. They are certainly ones to watch for and we look forward to their continued success!

Pink Tartan Spring 2009

www.pinktartan.com

Pink Tartan's Spring 2009 collection was glamorous in a 1950s Stepford Wives/Jackie O kind of way. The head scarves with large sunglasses, preppy sweaters thrown about the shoulders and punchy yellow and salmon colours will probably do well for the line commercially.

What do you think of this collection?

Anthony Hopkins Does My Wallpaper

Does this not look like Anthony Hopkins?

Maybe this would help?

Nice of him to humour me with his best Hannibal Lecter, no?

We've recently had our place redone and Sir Hopkins installed our wallpaper. It's not easy finding someone for this job. It's quite expensive and installers are hard to find. Who knew? When Alex (ok fine, his real name) came to our place to do the quote, he came armed with an impressive portfolio and a British accent. Do you think they are brothers? Perhaps Hopkins is prepping for a new role and this is just research?

He did a great job and the results will be revealed in a future episode of ChickChat TV!

Queens of the Web Panel at LWL

This weekend I spoke at the Ladies Who Launch Be Your Own Boss event at the Diesel Playhouse. I was on a panel called "Queens of the Web" where we shared stories and lessons we've learned from launching our own businesses. I didn't take any pictures, but luckily Christa from Petite Fashionista did! Thank you, Christa!

Debbie Travis was next and gave a really interesting speech about her career and how she juggled her success with her family. She came out with a new book called "Not Guilty", about her experiences and how as women we tend to feel guilty about having a career and a family.

I also really enjoyed the speech from Marissa McTasney of Tomboy Trades (now rebranded to Moxie Trades). She launched a line of construction wear for women including these fabulous pink workboots.

It was a great event and a pleasure to participate.
