Pillow Talk with Splice Style

Looking for a really unique Valentine's Day gift this year? We stumbled across these neat pillow cases recently and found them so delicious we had to know more. Vancouver-based Splice Style's Sandra Yue was kind enough to give us not only an interview but also a sweet discount for our ChickAdvisor members (see deal details at bottom)!

ChickAdvisor
What inspired the design of each pillow case?

Splice Style
The designs are meant to reflect a personal bond or unique connection between two people. When someone sees a design, I want them to be able to relate to that particular picture and to be able to see themselves as the characters in the designs because they too have experienced a similar moment with their partner.

Each pillow case comes in sets of two. The definition of Splice is the joining or uniting of two parts, so all my designs will be painted across a set of His & Her pillowcases.

My first five designs show lovers partaking in an outdoor activity or sport together because I think that these special trips and outdoor activities create some of the strongest bonds and sweetest memories that last forever.

In the future, I’d like to create designs for mothers, fathers, best friends and all the other relationships that are equally important to all of us.

ChickAdvisor
How long have you been in business?

Splice Style
I started my business just over a year ago but launched my website recently at the beginning of this year.

ChickAdvisor
You were inspired to start your business from a vacation. It's funny this is a common story I've heard from a lot of people. How did you go from inspiration to making it a reality?

Splice Style
For me, the actual steps from just having an idea and finally creating something tangible from it required resourcefulness and a willingness to learn and work hard. It started with a lot of research and reading about other people’s experiences and listening to other people’s advice. I, then, moved into taking some E-marketing courses, doing online Dreamweaver and Illustrator tutorials, attending importing seminars, and conducting some random market surveys. Slowly bit by bit, everything just started to come together.

But in between each step, I found my motivation through my family and my two dogs. What really pushed me to take each step after the last, was the ability to own and manage my own time so that I could spend more quality time with the people I love.

ChickAdvisor
What's the hardest thing about having your own business?

Splice Style
The hardest thing about having your own business is continually keeping yourself motivated and moving forward. There are always so many reasons to give up and so many hurdles to overcome, that it’s easy to lose focus of why you started the business to begin with.

ChickAdvisor
What's the best thing?

Splice Style
I think there are two “best” things to having your own business.

First thing is having a goal and ultimately a dream to work towards, because the opportunities are endless. It’s so empowering when you hold your future in your own hands. While yes, 50% of any successful business consists of luck and a lot of other factors you can’t control, the other 50%, I truly believe, is hard work, determination and perseverance. It’s pretty fulfilling to know that you’ve given the other 50%, that you can control, all you’ve got.

Second thing is that you never stop learning. I look back now and am amazed at what I have learned and accomplished. Before this, I didn’t know anything about building websites, designing in Illustrator, importing goods or anything of the like! And still to this day, I am constantly learning. But most importantly, throughout all of this, I’ve learnt a lot about myself, my passions and my limits.

ChickAdvisor
What is your best advice for would-be entrepreneurs?

Splice Style
My best advice would be to make a point to celebrate everything. And when I say everything, I mean everything! Celebrate both successes and failures, however big or small. Do a victory dance every time you solve a problem. When you finally overcome that writer’s block and compose some great website content, save the file as “Damn I’m Good.doc”.

In the end, just to remember, that ultimately it is all up in your mind. It is as difficult or as fun as you want it to be. It’s kind of like falling flat on your face once, picking yourself back up and learning how not to fall again. So really, what started as a failure becomes an even bigger success and yet another reason to celebrate! It’s these little victories and silly celebrations that will keep you going and pushing forward on this journey.

8 Tips for Working Successfully from Home

by Robin Mitchell

Have you thought about working from home? Of course you have! (that little mix-up with the FedEx guy is totally unrelated, though)

But how?

Most successful at-home workers find themselves carrying over the habits and disciplines of a traditional workplace into their home office. It takes a great amount of discipline to successfully work from home. Establishing a routine is key.

1. Get dressed. Even if you see no one all day, working in a bathrobe or pajamas will make a person feel less professional and could eventually affect how you view your career.

2. Start the day by going out. After getting dressed and ready for the new day, it's a good idea to leave the house for a moment. Buy a newspaper and coffee, take a brisk walk, or drop children off at school or child care. This outing feels like a commute for the telecommuter and when you return home you'll be ready to work.

3. Establish goals. You should be able to clearly establish goals regarding what you want to achieve through your new work arrangement. Assess goals and revise on a regular basis.

4. Write a work plan. It's your To-Do list of things to accomplish every day. Cross completed items off to give you a sense of your progress.

5. Avoid distractions. Even if your favorite TV show is broadcast during the day, do not leave the TV on while you work. Tape your shows and watch them after working hours.

6. Set a daily schedule. As an individual working from home you should set working hours during which work is the primary task at hand. Just like when you work in an office, if a distraction presents itself, doing your job is the focus.

7. Take breaks. To avoid feeling as though you are hooked up intravenously to your laptop, schedule regular breaks. Whether you make a fresh pot of coffee or just get up to stretch, it will help you feel as though you are not chained to your desk.

8. Schedule "dates." Try to go into the office occasionally or schedule to meet friends after work. This will ensure that you remain connected even though you are working solo.

Do you work from home? What is your secret to success?

Top 7 Sad Movie Soundtracks

Some films have such beautiful and haunting soundtracks you may find yourself tempted to illegally downl buy them so you can relive the moments over and over in your mind or at least turn up the volume and pretend your life is a movie and this is your sound track. It's perfect as accompanying music when you want to bawl and feel sorry for yourself.

Now the trouble is, there are so many amazing soundtracks out there. How do you find the best of the bunch? Lucky for you I had insomnia last night and spent a lot of money on Itunes downloading the best melancholy tracks.

Here are my top 7 movie soundtrack songs to feel like you are in a movie/accompany sad thoughts and/or bawling:

P.S. Best if played in this order...

1. Meeting Laura (Perfume: The Story of a Murderer)
~ You may be tempted to sing along but please don't... just don't.

2. Atonement (Atonement)
~ Try to mentally reunite Robbie and Cecilia if you can.

3. Remembering Munich (Munich)
~ I guess you could sing along to this one. The lyrics seem fairly doable.

4. IM "Martha" (The Lives of Others)
~ Play this on your Ipod on the subway and pretend you are a spy on your way to a secret meeting. Remember to wear dark glasses.

5. Medieval Waters (In Bruges)
~ Colin Ferrel gets shot. What other sad inspiration do you need?

6. The Story of Grandmere (Chocolate)
~ Try to wait for a windy day before you play this. Then put in a red cape and pack all of your belongings into one tiny suitcase with no wheels.

7. Lisieux (La Vie En Rose)
~ It would be ideal if you could be walking through the streets of Paris when you listen to this. See what you can do about that.

Friday Fun: Would You Eat Squirrel?

During lunch, Alex mentioned that the British are into eating squirrels. I was torn between vomiting or sharing this with you for a Friday laugh.

Apparently there is an over-abundance of squirrels in the UK, and what better way to deal with it than to saute it in a lovely sauce, add some side veggies and serve it for dinner. Topping it with hazelnuts or baking it into a meat pie is also quite popular. This article from NY Times has the full scoop.

Even in my meat eating days I don't think I would be able to stomach this. What about you? Would you eat Squirrel?
