Admirers Getting Grabby With President Obama?

President Barack and Michelle Obama, Photo by Larry Downing

Who doesn't like a good butt grab here and there, but would you really do it to the President of the United States? I know there would be no butt-grabbing with Prime Minister Steven Harper! In a new book called "Barack and Michelle: Portrait of an American Marriage", author Christopher Anderson claims that Michelle's response to the President's admiring fans are "Get a life". And appropriately so!

Yes, President Obama is a rather charming and handsome man but isn't there a line you just don't cross? You would think there would be some level of respect even if it does boosts his ego a bit. He's the President, not a rock star! Michelle says in Anderson's book, "Back off. It's just embarrassing that's all". I agree - you're grown women for goodness sakes! It doesn't matter if they are public figures. If he was just another average dude, would you really go up to someone's husband and grab his ass because you thought he was good-looking? Defend your man Michelle Obama!

What do you think? Do you agree with Michelle's reaction?

Reviews That Amuse Us: The Health Club You Love to Hate

When it comes to gyms, you don't pull any punches. Take this one for example:

"It is very dirty. The washroom at the **** location should be condemned."

"I asked her how many times the gym is cleaned, and she (management) said, 3 to 4 times a week. I asked her again, do you mean to tell me with all the number of people using the facility; you don’t clean the gym everyday let a lone several times a day? She arrogantly told me that “you can’t expect the gym to be cleaned everyday if you pay (she opened my account) $20/month for membership."

"The huge mirror in the room that they hold classes has been held together with duct tape for quite some time."

These guys aren't winning your votes either:

"They (head office) literally told me that their sales staff are allowed to say whatever they want to get the sale."

"These people are huge scammers, don't let there nice facility fool you. (...) My father's friend worked out at *** and when his membership ended they still kept billing him, he eventually had to get a new credit card. These people called my mother and yelled at her on the phone and made her mad to the point of tears."

So which one do you hate the most? (drum roll please!)

The award for the most hated health club on ChickAdvisor goes to these guys.

Question: Does anyone have a health club they actually like? Review it here!

Party in your Parking Space?

Did you know that vehicles travel 950,000 miles every year, looking for a spare parking spot rather than pulling into a premium priced parkade or selecting a spot a few blocks away? That's 38 trips around the world!

To protest this and the slow elimination of public urban greenspace in favor of development, some environmental activists dreamed up PARKing Day. What started four years ago in a single space in San Francisco is now celebrated in over 100 countries.

According to MSNBC, participants set up mini lawnscapes complete with portable grilles, lounges, and kiddie pools with their friends, while others created grassy oases for cyclists passing by.

What do you think - neat idea or time waster?

Ali's Fall Picks

I know... I don't want to think about Fall either. But with September comes new clothes and that part is very exciting! Here's what my visa and I will be splurg investing in this fall.

1. Little Grey Dress (pair with black lace flower tights) Teenflo: I spotted this recently in Teenflo and just love it because it's a nice alternative to black and can transition easily from the office to dinner.

2. Stackable bracelets from Aldo: I'm a sucker for the big bracelet trend. Accessorize any outfit with these colourful chunky bracelets.

3. Danier Scarf: I love this black and white printed scarf with the tree motif from Danier. It's an easy way to spice up your look and stay warm.

4. Black Leather Tights Aritzia: I know we all tried to kill tights back in '07, but leather/pleather or black shiny tights are the modern twist and I think they're fun! Top with a long cardigan, some boots or cute flats, and voila!

5. Cole Haan Classic Black Bag: A classic black bag is always a good investment because you can wear it for years. Cole Haan bags are great quality and I like the clean lines of this one. The price is good too!

6. Over the Knee Boots: LOVE this look over a good pair of distressed jeans and a long sweater. They may be a bit risque for some but if the heel isn't too high they look just fabulous.

7. Cozy Cable Knit Sweater Zara: Big cozy sweaters are one of the few tolerable things about fall in my opinion!

8. Danier Leather Bomber Jacket: This with a white beater a good pair of jeans and you've never looked cooler.

9. Capelet from Joe Fresh: This just looks so Paris to me. It's casual yet sophisticated and perfect for a fall walk in the park.

10. We'll see ;)

Which new fall pieces are you excited about?

Dear Readers,

We are pleased to preview for you our new site makeover, courtesy of Mr. Kanye West:

Yea or Nay?

TIFF Swag at the Tastemakers Lounge

I’m not a celebrity (I know - you’re surprised), but visiting the Tastemakers Lounge, set up for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), was a quick taste of the privileges of the glittering stars embarking upon TO this month.

The lounge is set up as a free-for-all... that is - as long as you’re a somebody. As a celebrity, or at least a big name participant in TIFF, you (okay, your assistant) can make an appointment for you to visit the lounge to stock up on everything from D&G’s new androgynous fragrances (Ashton and Demi could share!) to super soft bamboo t-shirts (Toronto-based GUATS), pretzels in Belgian chocolate (Sexy Gourmet Food Company) and DVD box sets (AMC’s Mad Men). But the good news? We can all have the same loot as Woody Harrelson, Kat Dennings and Eric McCormack (three of this year’s visitors so far), since you don’t have to be a celebrity to go out and purchase the items featured in the lounge.

This year’s Tastemakers (one of the original celebrity gifting lounges at TIFF, now in its 5th year) is themed ‘Peace, Love & Film’ in honour of War Child – an organization that assists tens of thousands of war-affected children around the world each year. Rosie Levine, Canadian journalist and photographer has made it her mission to snap happy celebs in a moment of peace – literally forming the peace sign, in whatever pose or style inspires them. Photos taken so far at TIFF to add to Levine’s roster of peace-sign pics include Richard Lewis (Curb Your Enthusiasm), and McCormack flashing the peace sign while in lotus position (while on the beautiful President’s Choice HOME quilted storage bench on display)!

The lounge is set-up as a refuge within the TIFF-frenzied Intercontinental Hotel, abuzz with crowds of fans, industry insiders, and press junket flaks. On a typical TIFF day, over 20 ‘somebodies’ visit the lounge to stock up, and get fluffed up. Chiggy’s Touch Salon (Yorkville), and Joe Fresh Beauty – the insanely well-priced, yet fabulously diverse collection of make-up and beauty tools, provide touch-ups in the lounge before celebrities exit to a whirlwind of flashes. Montreal make-up artist Martine L’Heureux, freshened my make-up, offering some celeb-worthy tips and tricks using the Joe line. The cream blush sticks offer that ‘Megan Fox’ juicy glow with just a few dabs and the polished lip gloss offers the Angelina without an injection.

Not only do celebs leave beautified and bright from the Lounge, they’ve also now got games to play to pass the time between press junkets thanks to Mattel, luxury hair tools for touch-ups (Rowenta) and a bag to tote it all thanks to eco bag company, Bring Your Own Bag (BYOB).

Simply fabulous!

Traveling Wine Country: Gone VQA for a Day

In one day I went from cranky sleep-starved freelancer to an imbibing bon vivant in less than two hours. With compliments of the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO), a van full of Toronto’s top young food writers set off to Prince Edward County to experience pastoral life, VQA wines and conversation that questioned the existence of Lauren Conrad’s ghost writer over boxed suppers from Pinch Gourmet.

The joke was I had never visited Ontario’s Prince Edward County; a cornucopia of wineries, galleries, sandy beaches and blue skies. It was a little embarrassing to realize how close it is to Toronto, yet I had never been.

Prince Edward County produces some interesting red wines as well as Chardonnay. We tasted quite a bit, but, overall, regardless of what price you’re looking to spend on a bottle at the local wine store, PEC red wines have an earthiness, a lingering minerality and lively fruit aromas. If you’re looking to pick up a wine to go with the average “sip n’ b*tch” Friday night with the gals, a mid priced blend is the best bet.

For pizza or tapas I recommend the medium bodied Rosehall Run’s 2007 Sullyzwicker Red for $14.75. It’s a fun and accessible wine that is paired best with friends and conversation. It isn’t a wine that’s going to make any promises it can’t deliver, because it’s a relaxed and easy drinking blend.

For dessert, a sweeter sipper or a great hostess gift, the Huff Estates VQA First Frost 2007 for $19.95 is a quasi-ice wine has a taste that rolls off the tongue like drops of honey. Sweet normally pairs well with sweet, but you may find it interesting to know that sweeter wines also work with spicier food. Try the First Frost with a curry dinner and let me know how you like it.

Although the Pinot Noirs are the region’s best known wines, I found them too earthy for my own personal taste. However, if you wanted to give one a try, start with The Grange’s Trumpour’s Mill Pinot Noir 2007 $19.95. It was recently featured as a wine of the month in Vintages’ magazine and while I found the tannins to be incredibly drying and not suitable as a sipper sans pairing, I highly recommend pairing the Trumpour’s Mill with creamy cheeses, meaty steaks or any rich deep fried foods. The tannins will help cut the fat on your palate making the two work so well together you’ll be an all star for pulling the pairing off.

As far as going back to Prince Edward County, I intend to return in November to participate in an experiential program where tourists can help with the grape harvest. So beyond wines, the region is a great Toronto-local getaway for a day and a must visit for anyone traveling from away. Listen, Prince Edward County makes wine, if only for that reason, it’s tops in my books!

Cheers!
