I think the benefits are situational, though. When my husband and I were in college, we lived downtown and it was far more convenient to walk or bike wherever we wanted to go. When we bought a house years later, it was too far from the core to make this practical. I used the bus and my husband drove our only car. Once we had two kids, though, the bus was not a realistic transport.
