No Excuses Facial Treatments at Ritual 2

We all love the idea of going for monthly facials, highlights, manicures and pedicures, but that can really add up. Hair and nails aren't really negotiable, so it's usually the facial that doesn't make the regular beauty routine. That's unfortunate because our skin is truly the most worthy investment of the lot - unless you have premature grays like I do, in which case it is a tie with the hair.

I get a lot of emails from PR companies with news releases on the newest spas, services and treatments among a slew of other announcements. Generally, unless there is something in the email that really grabs my attention, it gets filed under "G" for garbage because, well, it is impossible to cover everything. So when I received a blast that Ritual 2 on King St. W is offering speedy wallet-conscious MicroZone Treatments, I was intrigued and immediately called their publicist to see if I could test drive one. Lucky me, they let me try two!

The MicroZone Treatments are five quick 20 minute facial treatments for $25 a pop.
Using only Dermalogica Products, these sweet pick me ups are designed to address the following issues:

1. Dull skin? The Flash Exfoliation Treatment polishes and brightens your skin.

2. Bothersome breakout? Extractions are in order to decongest your problem areas with the Blemish Banishing Treatment.

3. Tired eyes? The Eye Treatment concentrates on hydrating and minimizing fine lines, leaving you looking well-rested and refreshed.

4. Rough, chapped lips? Their exfoliating, hydrating and firming Lip Treatment is designed to plump your pout.

5. Feeling dehydrated? The Hydrating Treatment quenches environmentally stressed skin.

My appointment was set for Saturday to try the Flash Exfoliation and the Extraction treatments. I thumbed through magazines for 10 minutes while I surveyed the bustling little spa. The concrete floors, white walls and pink accents are quaint and cheery. The front section is a full service hair salon with a little Dermalogica products corner where anyone can walk in, test the products and take home a sample or two. Tucked in the back, behind a thick curtain is the spa area.

After a short wait I was greeted by my esthetician, Samantha who carefully explained the treatments and did a "face mapping" of my skin telling me how the different areas were doing. I did pretty good, with the exception of some "pinking" on my cheeks, which Samantha told me can be caused by issues with your lungs, usually caused by smoking or extreme temperatures. Since I've never smoked a cigarette in my life it's fair to split the credit between Winnipeg's Artic winters and Toronto's smog. Thanks! I scored a "B" for my chin area, which actually means "breakout activity" thanks to a sizable zit that has taken up residence there.

Samantha expertly slathered and massaged my skin for the exfoliation (very nice!) and then turned up the lights for the extractions. I never look forward to extractions as they can be quite painful. It's like getting excited before a bikini wax. You don't. It hurts, but it makes you look better. I don't know if it was Samantha or the way they all do extractions at Ritual 2, but these did not hurt at all. It was surprisingly pain free. The 40 minutes went by in a blink and I was sorry when it was over. For a combined retail price of $50, these treatments lasted approximately 45 minutes and were well worth it.

There was no heavy sales pitch at the end of the treatments. Samantha actually said to keep doing what I was doing, but step up the exfoliation to 3 times a week for the summer.

Having never visited Ritual 2, I was struck by how friendly the staff were. There is absolutely zero attitude here. This makes perfect sense: Owners Maria Cristina and Bruna were former bartenders - an excellent occupation for honing great people skills!

For $25, I have now have no excuse not to add these treatments to my regular beauty routine. I will definitely be back!

Lise Watier Toscana: Summer 08

The new "Tuscany" collection from Lise Watier is really stunning. I received a package recently containing their glittery eyeliners, Toscana eyeshadow quads, pink marble blush and gloss sticks. I of course tried it all immediately.

The collection is an homage to the charms of Tuscany. Lise Watier envisioned her latest summer collection to reflect its natural yet refined beauty. Having been there myself I can see why she chose it for her inspiration. The olive groves, rolling hills, cypress trees and miles of vineyards and breathtaking vistas make Tuscany the perfect muse for pretty much anything.

"Enhanced by velvet or pearl finishes and made exquisite by soft, hydrating textures; the coloration this season plays with light for an artful effect that is both pure and sophisticated. A smouldering eye, sun-kissed face and sultry mouth are essential to the look, one that’s open to suggestion, mysterious and sensual."

This makeup is really fun to put on. Everything glitters. The Pink Marble Blush Powder ($30) is a swirl of pink, bronze and coral that add a beautiful sheen to the cheekbones. The Glitter Pencils (aka eyeliner with sparkles in it) are really interesting. They retail for $16 each. Normally I would balk at this idea: how much sparkle does a non-Vegas Show Girl really need? But the result is just a hint of extra twinkle that actually looks really beautiful. The pencils are soft even with the added sparkles, and the colour selection is really fun and fresh.

The Toscana Quartets ($35) are just too pretty. I fell in love with the gold, coppery shades and the emerald greens. The shadows are baked on ceramic following the latest processes of Italian cosmetics manufacturing. Refined and light, the tints are silky-tetured, soft, luminous and long wearing.

The Gloss Sticks ($18.50) are infused with olive oil so lips feel moisturized while looking beautiful. Lise Watier Toscana 2008 collection is available in select stores.

Recommended: Tula Hot Yoga

Yes our "blog this" badges are little broken right now...

My first experience with hot yoga was really positive and I decided it was something I should try to do on a regular basis. I needed a more convenient location so I did a little surfing and found Tula Hot Yoga on Duncan street.

The first class I attended was a 1 hour session at 8am. The most challenging part of that class was getting there at that ridiculous hour. Though it is a 15 min walk, my lazy ass took a cab. The session was nice, but I wasn't sore afterwards at all. I expect to hurt after a 1 hour workout. For at least 24 hours. I felt nothing. Though I didn't get my ass kicked as I'd hoped, I did get a decent sweat on, which I anticipated would be good for my skin general health.

Tula has this great deal where your second class is free so I decided to give it another go. I showed up yesterday for a 75 minute slot at 10am, a much more humane hour. I made the mistake of eating a couple of toaster waffles prior to the class, but the 15 min walk helped a little with the digestion. Ladies, don't be a dummy and eat before a workout. You will be burping and revisiting it. It is hard to contain a fart in downward dog. Just sayin'.

Thankfully, this class was killer. I sweat ferociously. I could hear it plopping on my yoga mat. I was completely drenched. I looked around to see if I was the only one dripping that badly and I was, but others looked like they were having a tough time of it too. I then proceeded to knock over my Sigg bottle and had to use my towel to mop up the floor. Still I soldiered on, sweating additionally from the embarrassment. This of course pleased me as I thought of how my skin would glow. The class was quite challenging and we spent a lot of time in positions with our heads upside down, which hurt my brain after awhile, but I feel like I got an excellent workout.

Today, 24 hours later, I am nice and sore. The problem areas on the back of my thighs are in agony. I am so pleased. My husband commented unprompted that my skin looks really nice. Based on that alone I will be going back.

Oh, the things we do for beauty health.

Does Lip Gloss Cause Cancer?

My purse has at least 3 different kinds of lip gloss, and I'm betting yours does too. It's the #1 makeup must-have, ever since LipSmackers took up permanent residence in your pencil case back in 3rd grade.

Now you can add it to the list of Things That Cause Cancer... at least according to a new article from MSNBC. The problem is that glosses without SPF not only impair your lips' self-hydrating process, the shiny goop acts like a magnifying glass that focuses harmful rays right on your kisser. It can lead to premature aging, disfiguring growths, and lip cancer (squamous cell carcinoma).

What's a girl to do? Just off the top of my head:

1. Chuck your fancy glossies and stock up on Alpine zinc balm (sure - it looks like diaper cream but it's all the rage on the slopes, right? Nnnnnno.)

2. Stage a sit-in at Nars and demand better lip products. While you're there, you can hubbub with other fashionistas and compare manicurists. After such a grueling day you should hit the nearest martini bar for a well-deserved Cosmo.

Ok, in all seriousness, while we are careful to cover our faces and bodies with protective creams, we often forget about lips, eyelids, and earlobes (that was one unfortunate lesson I learned the hard way). Some of our recommended picks that do have SPF:
Clinique Long Last Glosswear (w/ spf15), $14 at Sephora.com

Revlon Super Lustrous Lip Gloss (w/ spf15), 2 for $12 at Amazon.com

And while you're at it, avoid that not-so-subtle rouge on the brow bone (just take my word for it)...
Dove Energy Glow Eye Cream (w/ spf8), $10 at Amazon.com

Spring Has Sprung

The first day of spring is March 20, did you know that? I have to admit it doesn't feel like it to me, due to Toronto's cold weather and recently snow falls. Well here are 8 pampering tips that will hopefully get you in the mood for Spring.

1. Remove those dead skin cells on your face and banish dull-looking skin. Try Neutrogena Deep Clean Gentle Scrub that contains microbeads gently which exfoliate surface skin while Beta Hydroxy cleans deep into pores for soft, smooth skin.

2. Get those toes ready for spring and open toed shoes - get a pedicure! I recommend FLOW Nail Spa on Queen Street West.

3. Perk yourself up with a little on-the-go aromatherapy. Smell This Aromatherapy's Synergies are packaged in 10ml roll-ons that can be popped into your purse. Why not be Happy Go Lucky on the bus, Pull Yourself Together at work, or Pay Attention whilst watching America's Next Top Model.

4. Wear a pretty spring lip colour. Bobbi Brown's Pink Raspberry Glitter Lip Gloss from the Pink Raspberry Collection is feminine and cheery.

5. Spring clean your cosmetics. Chatelaine has a great tool to learn when you should ditch those cosmetics.

6. Treat yourself to a new hair do. Freshen up your colour, trim away those ends and get stylin'.
Check out ChickAdvisor for readers recommended salons.

7. Keep those legs smooth and hair free for skirts with bare legs. I know it's cold now but it won't be forever...will it?! Try VEET Salon Line Ready to Use Wax Strips. They are quick, easy and mess-free.

8. Ditch the heavy winter musk—there’s a fresh, flirty fragrance waiting right around the corner. Consider floral, citrus, or marine scents with light aromas for Spring. Stella McCartney Stella (floral), Lancôme Trésor (floral), Calvin Klein Escape (marine), DKNY Be Delicious (citrus).
Bring on Spring!

New Product Alert: All That Shine

We often receive samples or press releases of new products coming out into the market. Some are great, others... well, not so much. We'll try to post the ones we think would interest you most on this blog.

Herbal Essences has done it again. They recently scored points with the ChickAdvisor crowd for their new and improved line of shampoos, conditioners and mousses including Body Envy. Now they've come up with All That Shine, an easy way to get salon shiny hair at home for a fraction of the cost.

All That Shine can be used on treated hair or on au naturale (except grays) to add a boost of serious shine and softness for up to 6 weeks. I decided to test it out and see if it was worth the hype. The instructions say to wait until about 3 weeks post salon visit to apply All That Shine if you colour your hair. I visit the salon every 5 weeks (my hair grows like weeds) and they always add a shine treatment so there was no point in experimenting on myself. I decided to test it out on my sister, whose healthy brown locks are 100% natural. She came over for dinner last weekend and I cornered her in the bathroom for a surprise hair treatment. Being the good natured girl she is, she obediently let me wash, slather and blow dry her hair for a good hour. We were both impressed with the results. Her hair is now shinier and softer than ever. Sold!

All That Shine is available at drugstores for around $9.99 and on drugstore.com for $7.99.

Sunlight, Vitamin D, and Your Health

This is crazy.

Sunbathing is out.
Self-tanner and tinted beauty products are in, but only when it's done right (and that's the problem).
'Fake bake' is definitely out.
Looking pale is supposed to be in, but really - it's not.
Sunlight is good for you, Sunlight is bad for you.

I'm confused.

Our society is hung up on the latest trends, but slowly we are returning to our parents' maxim: Everything In Moderation. It's kind of the best of both worlds, where you don't have to swing between Hollywood excess and Himalayan hermit ideals.

We can all agree that too much sun ages us more quickly and may lead to a variety of diseases
